About Us

Hi! We’re the Hammonds- a quirky little family on the journey of homeschooling our two boys and our new baby girl. For many and various reasons, we didn’t feel like our local schools were the best fit for our older child, now in Kindergarten, and can’t afford private schools so now we are doing it ourselves. So, here we are navigating through all the methods, curriculum and concepts of schooling at home and, for now, deciding on a secular eclectic approach. Since our children are so little, most of their days will revolve around play and exploring all the amazing things that Houston has to offer. We’re excited to see where this year takes us!

My name is Vera. I have a degree in English with an emphasis in Secondary Education, although I don’t read near as much as I should or would like to. I’ve been a stay at home mom since J, our oldest, was born and have loved it (most of the time). I’m an avid over-researcher and definitely tend to over-analyze and over-think. My biggest task is overcoming my control issues and making sure I continue down a path that’s best for the kids, even if it’s hard on me.

Jony is a software engineer and the reason any of this is possible and, quite frankly, the reason that we’re here. Our boys happen to be just like him in most ways, especially when it comes to being led to math, science and logic. Along with being a nerd, he enjoys biking, cars, and building things. He has a huge list of house projects which he will never have time to finish, but he’s a fantastic role model for the boys and they adore him.

J is our oldest boy, full of wit and personality, and is the oldest five year old I’ve ever met. He loves dinosaurs, sharks/whales, all things art, legos, playing with dirt and sticks, and sports. His current life aspiration is to be a paleontologist. He looks forward to doing his school work every day and is constantly wanting more!

G is our little firecracker and is three. He’s dramatic and a force to be reckoned with, but he is the sweetest and cuddliest little guy around. He adores his big brother and will do anything he does or asks him to do until it comes to sharing. He loves doing puzzles and is obsessed with the alphabet. He’s our little singer and can usually be found belting out his tune of the day. Being preschool aged still, he’ll still be playing and doing whatever makes him happy, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see him right there with J while we’re doing his schoolwork. Keeping him entertained is and will remain a challenge, but at least he’s cute.

Baby Girl K is our newest addition, arriving in June of 2015, and passes her time by nursing and enjoying short naps. She is adored by her big brothers and will be an interesting, yet wonderful, aspect of our schooling this year.
